Mobile phones of worth $1,428 million during 2007-12 have been imported by Pakistanis
Telecom imports in 2012 reached $ 954 thousand, marking an improve of 24.5 % over the season before. The rapid level was due to the improve of imports of cellphone handsets amounting to $ 465.3 thousand in 2012 as compared to $ 218.2 thousand in 2011, illustrating a growth of 113 %. The increased cellular teledensity of 120 thousand activated the escalation of need of cheaper Chinese cellphone as well as expensive mobile phones causing the telecoms providers to focus more on lucrative internet many and packages and also fuel the drive towards 3G.During season 2007-08, complete import of cellphone with power supply value $ 445.9 thousand, in 2008-09 $ 129.7 thousand, $ 169.23 thousand in 2009-10, $ 218.2 thousand in 2010-11 and during 2011-12, the nation invested US $ 465.3 thousand on devices transfer.
Similarly, on other telecoms equipment, the nation invested $ 885.1 thousand in 2007-08, $ 570.4 thousand in 2008-09, $ 556.45 thousand in 2009-10, $ 548.1 thousand in 2010-11 and $ 488.7 thousand in 2011-12.
Though it is reported that PTA is encouraging existing and new companies to initiate telecom manufacturing in the country and that the government and PTA are willing to provide all possible cooperation to facilitate the process, there seems no visible proof of the effort. No mobile phone manufacturing company has yet announced the start of its operations in Pakistan..
