A group of scientists of the Babes-Bolyai School in Cluj-Napoca, a city in NW Romania, has created a formula for synthetic blood vessels whose initial tests have proven encouraging.
The group led by professor Radu Silaghi-Dumitrescu, who is only a age 39, has been doing research to create the synthetic blood vessels for six decades and their discovery could prove crucial given the lack of blood vessels doctors need in cases of severe injuries and major operations. The blood vessels is made of water, sodium, albumin and a protein hemerythrin extracted from underwater viruses which makes the artificial blood vessels stress proof.
According to the researchers the results of the first tests conducted on mice are motivating.
“The mice treated with this type of blood ‘made in Cluj’ have remained indifferent and this is what we want, not to display signs of inflammation or disease. The ultimate goal is we don’t get rejection reactions of the artificial blood by the human body which we have for some of the current products” professor Silaghi-Dumitrescu said
