All devices running windows 7, windows 8 and windows 8.1, and all windows phone 8 and 8.1 handsets, will be able to upgrade to the new os without charge. Microsoft’s terry myerson said today that “once a device is upgraded to windows 10, we’ll be keeping it current for the supported lifetime of the device.”

The company had previously committed to updating all of its lumia windows phone 8 handsets to windows 10, but it wasn’t clear what its plans were for offering the update to its desktop os, until today. Windows 10 will be best enterprise platform enabling customers to be more productive.

Continuum:

Microsoft has been working on “continuum” a way for the os to mold and adapt to whatever device it’s currently running on works on both touch machines and traditional keyboard and mice devices is key to its success.

Continuum was first shown off as a concept last year but now we finally got to see a real working version of the interface. Windows 10 can easily switch between traditional inputs and displaying the regular desktop to a much more touch-friendly version where full-screen modern apps and touch controls show up.

Cortana act as an assistant

cortana – the digital personal assistant found on windows phone – is now jumping on board with the desktop version of the os. Cortana, at least in this iteration of windows 10, lives in the taskbar on the desktop and can be accessed directly via the “hey Cortana” voice command.

Arm-based tablets and laptops:

Microsoft is also talking about a new build of windows 10 designed specifically for arm-based tablets and laptops. Meaning this is the successor to windows phone and windows rt.

Universal applications:

Microsoft has unveiled a new version of office for touch devices such as phones and small tablets. These are a great example of universal apps which sync and share code on any windows 10 device.

Another example of a universal app that will be available on all windows 10 devices is a new photos app that will let you make small edits and organize your images.

And the most important and the new one that is music app which will also be universal and will also feature the long-awaited onedrive music locker service.

Microsoft has had great success with xbox live, and it’s now time to extend that to phones, tablets, and desktop pcs. From phone to tablet to console to pc, phil spencer has promised that the gaming experience will be great for everyone on any windows 10 device.

With directx 12, the company is offering game developers access “closer to the metal” than ever before, allowing them to tap into the full potential of today’s powerful multi-core processors. Games will be able to run up to 50% faster even on the current directx 11 hardware. That will be especially important for open world games, which tend to be very cpu-bound
