With more than 100 million copies of licenses sold, Windows 8 is ready for an overhaul in its looks. Microsoft corporate VP of Windows programme management, Antoine Leblond mentioned in a blog post as to what could be expected of the new version named as Windows 8.1.
He mentioned that the Windows 8.1 would deliver enhancements in important areas like personalization, the built-in apps, cloud connectivity and Windows Store experience in addition to having significant improvements in management and security.
The lockscreen would allow users to have a slideshow of the pictures from either the computer or the cloud and will also allow the device camera to take pictures without logging in. Users will also be able to filter apps by tags like name, date installed and most used. Built-in apps, like the Microsoft music app, will also get a tidying up and cleaning off.
Windows 8.1 will be available for on 26 June.
Leblond said,
“Windows 8 has been a bold, necessary move towards mobility for the PC industry – pushing ourselves and our industry ahead with a touch-first approach that is redefining the PC as we know it, while offering the best of all worlds across any device at any time.”
“We’ve been watching, we’ve been listening; Windows 8.1 will continue to build on what you love bringing the latest advancements in hardware, apps, cloud services and the OS to enable a unique experience in everything you do.”
One of the most interesting changes will be the return of the Start button which will now be called as Start “tip” though it will be the familiar Windows logo.
The start “tip” would appear whenever the user would move the mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen, and would always remain visible on the taskbar when on the desktop. There are also options to change what the corners do, and options to boot into alternate screens.
