A Pakistani professional selected by ISOC’s (the Internet Society) Next Generation Leaders Program

The Internet Society’s Next Generation Leaders (NGL) program blends coursework, practical experience and mentorship to help prepare young professionals from around the world to become the next generation leaders of Internet technology, policy, and business model. The NGL Program was officially launched in 2009 at a youth forum during the ITU Telecom World week in Geneva and is aimed at emerging talents across the globe, between the ages of 20 and 40. A global, mission-based organization, the Internet Society promotes the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world.

Currently working as Manager Telecoms & ICT Research at a technology company, Zakir has been part of SAMENA Telecommunications Council’s Strategic Research Team and has worked on a number of region-specific and beyond the SAMENA region, research projects ranging from 3G, Broadband, ICT policies, spectrum harmonization, digital dividend and regulations, among others. He has authored several articles and industry reports in the areas including but not limited to optical networks, wireless networks, spectrum management, 3G, broadband, domain name industry and satellite communications.

The selection for the NGL Program consisted of a very rigorous screening procedure where hundreds of applications were received from highly qualified professionals from across the globe. In terms of participants, there is not only a wide geographical diversity, but also diverse professional backgrounds (government, international organizations, business, civil society, academia and media). Such a composition of participants will most definitely serve as a vibrant environment for exchange of knowledge and experience. The ISOC NGL Program will train emerging leaders in Internet technology, policy and business, through both academic and practical aspects. The NGL participants will be invited to apply for ISOC’s representation program, offering them the possibility to attend meetings of the Internet Governance Forum, the World Bank and OECD, and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

The Internet, ICTs and Internet Governance (IG) put together a number of issues varying in scope from the technical, economical and legal to the socio-cultural components, all with some kind of impact on society. The e-Learning program which is delivered through the Internet Society’s learning management system (LMS) explores four thematic parts: history of the Internet, technical background, Internet governance and policy, and emerging issues.

The NGL program is designed to advance the careers of individuals who have the potential to become local, regional, & international leaders within the Internet technology, policy & governance communities. The curriculum empowers participants to share their particular expertise with colleagues while acquiring knowledge in areas outside of their specialties.
