PHC directs government to get Google to open office in Pakistan

In proceedings of case in Peshawar High Court (PHC) regarding blasphemous content on the internet the bench headed by Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Asadullah Khan Chamkani, the Federal Government was directed to sign treaties with Google, YouTube and other similar service providers to establish regional offices in the country.

On May 28, the bench in PHC had ordered the respective authorities to take urgent steps to block sacrilegious content on social media websites and demanded a detailed response within 20 days.

During this court hearing, officials from the information ministry, PTA and interior ministry appeared in court where the court questioned why did the ministry have to wait to receive complaints in order to block obscene and blasphemous content from the web. The PTA official replied that even though they had blocked 20,000 URLs upon requests from different sources, there was no such method or system by which such a content could be blocked automatically.

The PTA official claimed that one of the solution was to get service providers like Google and YouTube to open offices in Pakistan after which they will be liable to follow laws of the state. The official said the inter-ministerial committee looking into the matter has also proposed setting up such an office so that controversial content can be blocked.

The court stated the countries like Iran and India had followed such methods and had been able to solve the matter. The court then directed the federal government to expedite the process of enacting the proposals of the inter-ministerial committee.
