Surge in encounters in Karachi, 18 killed in 10 days

KARACHI: A surge has been seen in killings of criminals during encounters with police and Rangers in the city during last week.

 

According to police and Rangers statistics from January 27 to February 05, eighteen criminals have been killed in at least 47 encounters in the city.

 

An alleged dacoit was killed during an encounter in North Karachi Sector 11-E on February 5. According to police, Javed was arrested in injured condition after encounter but succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.

 

An accused was killed while his accomplice managed to escape after an encounter near Tayyaba Masjid, PECHS, Block-2 within the limits of Ferozabad police station on February 04.

 

A 28-year-old man also was killed in an encounter with Rangers in Nazimabad Block 1 on February 04.

 

On February 3, four alleged criminals were killed in four separate encounters.

 

On January 2, the police reported seven encounters in which a criminal was killed during one of them.

 

Similarly, on January 1, a Lyari gang war accused was killed in encounter with police in Baghdadi area. The accused has been identified as Sameer.

 

In a separate shootout on the same day, a dacoit was killed in alleged police encounter at Super Highway near Sohrab Goth. The accused was identified as Shah Kalam.

 

On the same day, SSP Rao Anwar claimed that the accused was killed in an encounter with police in Labour Square area of Landhi. He was identified as Siddique commando and was arrested in injured condition after encounter but later succumbed to injuries. He claimed that the killed man was involved in murder and kidnapping for ransom activities.

 

Two criminals were also killed in a Rangers encounter on the same day. According to Rangers, a targeted raid was conducted on the hideouts of terrorists involved in suicide attacks on Rangers. During the action, two accused affiliated with a banned group were killed after an exchange of fire.

 

On January 29, two criminals were killed in seven police encounters in the city. Moreover, on January 28, the police claimed to kill one accused in an encounter. Eight other encounters also occurred on the same day.

 

On January 28, Rangers claimed that they killed a criminal involved in murders, extortion and drug peddling during a targeted raid in Sukhia Ground, Old Sabzi Mandi area.

 

Furthermore, a criminal was killed in an encounter on January 27 while 10 other encounters were also reported by police. A notorious criminal also got killed during an encounter with Rangers in Old Sabzi Mandi area. He was identified as Tahir.

 

Talking to PPI, Spokesperson for Additional Inspector General Police (AIGP) Karachi, Atique Ahmed Shaikh, said that it was the duty of police to safeguard citizens and in this process if someone would try to challenge the writ of the government and disrupt law and order then they would respond to such activities. “Our policemen try their level best to avoid killings but when the criminals open fire on police then they have to retaliate.”

 

Shaikh said that the recent increase in killings during encounters was because of the increased terror attacks in the city, especially the attacks on police. To a question, he said that the police would also investigate that whether these encounters were real or fake.
