Clutter, Information Influx and Consumerism

In the current age where generation gaps, as said by some learned sociologists, appears after every two years, time management is a major issue and information overload is a substantial phenomenon of concern. Today’s youth considers time to be a luxury when in fact its scarcity is killing.

With so much information, open sourcing, Social Media and gaming options, it is just so difficult to find time to do the right things and in the right manner. A couple of decades ago, when our parents were young they complained about unavailability of desirable opportunities, lack of awareness and dearth of influential and direction based mentorship. We on the other hand are the sentient generation and the digital natives. We have more access to information than our grandparents could ever dream of. And this clutter of information, brands and products is leading us astray. Consumerism has seen exponential increment and class differences have widened manifold resultantly.

Perhaps a more mature, professionally sound, empowered and competitive youth is the solution to this social issue and can be achieved by teaching them hard skills like skimming, search engine optimization, the art of extracting right information from people and other information sources, multitasking and negotiation skills. Training them towards developing habits to get used to contemporary media and leave behind conventional media would also be a very good move. These would abet them to shift focus from being followers of dictatorial corporate rule, transform into more mature individuals and they will be able to make their mark and not get carried away by evils like consumerism and brand influx.

Media (both traditional and new) can play a phenomenal part in cultivating the right values too. More focused campaigns, and our people will start realizing and appreciating the importance of family time. Balance is the key to a prosperous life and it will only come when the right values are instilled through the right media.
