Google X: Neural Network Searches

Close your eyes for 5 seconds. Once you do that I want you to think randomly of an animal that you can imagine while your eyes are closed. Ok…  so let’s do it now. 5.4.3..2..1..0.  So what animal have you imagined? A lion? A monkey maybe? A squirrel? Or maybe a cat?  Well I like cats so I’ll just go with a cat but not because I like them but because this article explains how a computer rendered a cat’s picture just by going through the videos over the internet and teaching itself what a cat is!! Isn’t that amazing? I mean imagine a computer teaching itself what things are. Just like a baby getting to know things when the baby notices the people and everything happening around.

Well this computer that just taught itself what a cat is and how it looks, is a computer made by the secret society of Google that has been revealed recently named as Google X. Google X has several other mind-blowing projects such as project Loon which is aiming to provide internet to everyone around the world via balloons suspended in the air and projects such as self-driving cars, Google glass, drone-delivery and much more.cat

Coming back to the cat! The cat is the result of a neural network of 16,000 computer processors with one billion connections, the system is capable of complex calculations and something that maybe considered impossible is now possible because of this great algorithm. Around 10M videos of YouTube were fed in to the machine and Google claim that nothing exactly was told to the computer to look for, the system began to removing similar features and duplicates and started arranging images together hierarchically.

Everybody loves cats, I mean I do so maybe everybody does but I know at least the computer takes my side in this matter at least and guess what, the computer loves cats, so after going through the 10M videos the system finally rendered a cat’s picture and now it’s able to recognize something that Is my favorite and the computer’s too and that thing is the cat! Isn’t that amazing? I mean I’m totally loving the field of computer science and its wonders in this century. How would one think of it If they were told about 5 years back that a computer loves cats? Well let’s not get in to that discussion. Remember that the researchers claim that they never told the network what to look for and it just randomly rendered the cat and now it knows what a cat is. Want to have a look at what that cat looks like? Here it is!

Google specialists trust this capacity is because of the way that the system works correspondingly to the visual cortex in the human brain. The visual cortex is thought to contain supposed “grandmother neurons”, which store key pictures, for example, your loved ones’ faces. The framework built up a thought of what a human face resembles, however it did not have the specificity of known appearances put away in the human visual cortex.
