Shaheed-e-Millat Liaquat Ali Khan

Nation observed 65 death anniversary of the first Prime Minister and founding father of the country Liaquat Ali Khan on Sunday (October 16).

Liaquat Ali Khan hold the office of Prime Minister for four years i.e. 1947 till his assassination in 1951 in Rawalpindi.

Born the son of a landowner, Liaquat was educated at Aligarh, Allahabad, and Exeter College, Oxford.

A barrister by profession, like his leader, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, he entered politics in 1923, being elected first to the provincial legislature of the United Provinces and then to the central legislative assembly.

He joined the Muslim League and soon became closely associated with Jinnah.

By degrees he won first the respect and then the admiration of the Muslim community for his share in the struggle for Pakistan, when independence was won in 1947 and Jinnah became the first governor-general, Liaquat was the obvious choice as prime minister.

On October 16, 1951, Pakistan’s first prime minister Liaquat Ali Khan was assassinated in Rawalpindi’s Company Bagh (also known as East India Company Garden) during a public meeting of the Muslim City League.

He was a close aide to the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and it was during his rule that religious parties begin to take foothold in Pakistan.
